Their Sense of Freedom with Discipline

I read this amazing piece of writing on profile of an entrepreneur in a book called High Performance Entrepreneur by Subroto Bagchi. According to an author, a special kind of breed, who value their sense of freedom, and are willing to pay the price for it, are most likely to become entrepreneurs.

Successful entrepreneurs enjoy being free, setting their own goals, working towards their goals, and taking their own decisions. When they get the freedom to do what they want to do, they perform the best. They don’t enjoy someone asking their progress report now and then.

But freedom doesn’t mean lack of answerability. We mistake freedom with absence of accountability. Freedom is not deciding for yourself when to come and go, how much to spend on your luxury and entertainment, how much to pay yourself, etc. Rather, these attributes are not respected in the corporate environment.

Entrepreneurs are highly disciplined. Freedom for them is the ability to choose a line of business and set goals consistent with stakeholders’ ambitions. Their freedom is to write and rewrite their business plans whenever it’s required. Freedom is about the ability to take decisions on strategies and product roadmaps according to market changes. It is their ability to decide whom to hire and for what job. It is their ability to say that debate ends here and decision begins.

Freedom for them is some internal space, which they required to create great value for the company. It often involves taking risks, generating creative ideas, and staying ahead of the curve.
